Habitat: This Tinamou species can be found in humid forests in the lowlands and foothills. Distribution: This species has been reported from southern Mexico to northern Bolivia and Amazonian Brazil. Natural History Notes: The Great Tinamou is a mostly terrestrial bird that is shy and is rarely seen. Its call consists of two long whistles, with the first one lower pitched and repeated two to three times. Its diet consists of vegetable matter. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 40.6 cm and 45.7 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has the plumage mostly olive brown above with dark gray bars mostly on the upperparts and along the flanks. The birds reported from Bocas del Toro have a dark olive-gray crown.
