Habitat: Marine; reef-associated; juveniles often found amongst adjacent seagrasses. Distribution: Cristobal, Solarte, Carenero and Bastimentos Islands, Crawl Key, Hospital Point NE of Solarte Island and Wild Cane Key N of Bastimentos Island Natural History Notes: Juveniles and initial phase individuals can camoflage with sea floor; non territorial; feed on benthic alga and sea grasses. Depth: 1 - 15m Characteristics: Terminal phase: Olive-green to blue-green; fins usually varying shades of red to yellow. Other features include: turquoise area behind pectoral fin and underside; red cresent at margin of tail; clear pectoral fins but black at the base. Initial phase: Red-gray to red-brown with yellow highlights on the tail. Colour can be quickly paled leaving a red tincture around the pectoral fin and gill cover. Size (Terminal Phase) 14 - 16in, max. 18in.
