Habitat: Marine, reef-associated. May be seen schooling by day along the edges of patch reef, in shade of large coral formations or in sandy bottoms. Spread out over the flats to feed at night. Natural History Notes: Feeds at night on worms, gastropods, lamellibranchs, crustaceans and small fishes. Youngs, which are often found in Thalassia testudinum beds, feed primarily on the animals of the plankton within a few feets of the bottom. Depth: 3 - 40m Characteristics: White an yellow stripes on the head only (the head stripes may continue onto the body but they are then considerably and abruptly lighter behind the head). Scales notably larger above than below the lateral line anteriorly.
