[Lasionema glabrescens Benth., moreMacrocnemum glabrescens Wedd., Macrocnemum pastoense Karst.] |
Description: A medium-sized tree with a straight but irregular bole -- adults have deep and irregular, vertical fenestrations in the trunk. The leaves are fairly large, simple, and opposite, wider and rounded toward the tip and narrow at the base; the petiole is very short. The stipules are conspicuous at the apex of the branch, between the final pair of leaves - they are large, oval, and green. But they fall quickly, leaving a scar between leaf pairs further down the branch. Reproduction: The flowers are small, but in dense clusters and bright pink. They are conspicuous at a distance during the dry season, when they are produced. The fruits are small capsules that split open into two valves, releasing small winged seeds into the wind; they mature from April to June. Distribution: Very widespread in the area, from Pacific to Caribbean and even wet and montane sites. Most common along forested roads, for instance it is very common along Plantation Rd. and fairly common along Pipeline Rd. Not common in mature forest, but occurs sporadically in rather dense clusters. Similar Species: The unusual and highly fenestrated trunk is distinctive. Only two other species have such a trunk, another Rubiaceae LK amaico Amaioua corymbosa LK2 and the big legume LK pla2el Platypodium elegans. LK2 The latter has compound leaves with tiny leaflets and should not be confused, but Amaioua might be. It has rounder leaves and typically a less fenestrated trunk than Macrocnemum. In juveniles with small stems, Macrocnemum could be confused with several other large-leaved Rubiaceae, such as LK geniam Genipa americana, LK2 LK alsebl Alseis blackiana, LK2 or LK posola Posoqueria latifolia. LK2 Uses: The wood is hard and heavy and used in construction of houses in rural Panama, but has no commercial market. Descripción: Árbol de 10 a 25 m de alto. Tronco acanalado con surcos verticales profundos e irregulares. Corteza exterior marrón o rojiza. Ramitas terminales simpodiales. |
