Habitat: Found in a variety of habitats, including shallow patch reefs and areas of sedimentation and seagrass bottoms. Surface often covered with sediment and algal growth. Distribution: North Carolina, Florida, and Caribbean wide. Depth: 15 - 60 ft. Characteristics: Massive amorphous to cake shaped. Surface with round low elevations. Large oscules (8-15 mm wide) and small oscules (1-2 mm wide) aggregated. Compressible but dense in consistency. Exterior shades of gray to dark brown, central depression dark brown to black. Size: 1.5 - 5ft. Notes: Reported as toxic to fish, but eaten by Hawksbill turtles, Eretmochelys imbricata.
