Habitat: This dove species will favor undergrowth of humid forest in foothills. Distribution: This species has been reported from southern Mexico and Costa Rica to eastern Panama. Natural History Notes: Like the other Dove species, the Purplish-backed quail-dove is terrestrial and fairly shy and hard to find since it favors dense foliage. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 10 inches and 11 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The plumage is mostly olive brown on the above with a white forehead and a gray crown (on top of the head) and hindneck. On the upper back, we can distinguish a purple area with a triangular shape. The underparts are gray and more beige on the belly.
