Habitat: This species favors grassy field and pasture habitats in lowlands. Distribution: It breeds in North America and winters in South America, mainly in Argentina. Natural History Notes: This species is usually found alone or in small dispersed groups. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 27.94 cm and 30.48 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The beak is short, sharp and of a yellow coloration, such as the legs. This bird is physically interesting since it shows some disproportionate characteristics. For example, the head is fairly small whereas the black eyes are fairly large; the neck is long and slim as well as the tail that has a wedge shape. Regarding the coloration pattern, the part above is brown with blackish spots and cream-colored feather edges. The part below is whitish with brown stripes crossing the breast and the flanks.
