Polyp: Colony stolonal, about 1 cm tall; hydrorhiza embebbed in sponge tissue. Reproduction: Gonophores released as free medusae, developing in small clusters. Recently liberated medusae with four tentacular bulbs, four radial canals, simple manubrium, and nematocysts scattered on exumbrella. Ecology and Distribution: Previously recorded (as S. agassizii) in the western Atlantic, western Pacific, and Indian Oceans and in the Mediterranean Sea. Remarks: The specimens from Bocas del Toro were identified on the base of the polyp only, as the adult medusa was not observed. The two 16S sequences produced from specimens BTH 15.40 and BTH 15.79 are, however, remarkably different (10% genetic distance) and are likely to belong to two different species (with BTH 15.40 most likely belonging to S. agassizii and BTH 15.79 most likely belonging to S. bedoti).
