Adult: Species description based on Savage (2002). A small dirt frog. Males to 28 mm, females to 40 mm. Dorsal: The dorsal coloration may be light or dark brown, or pinkish, with some darker spotting or blotches. A purpley-black bar runs along the side of the head, through the eye to above and just beyond the arm. The dorsal surface ranges from smooth to warty, with chalice-shaped or parallel ridging. The upper surfaces of the thighs are barred. Ventral: Ventral coloration ranges from orange to yellow to olive green or grey, with small light spots. Area near the rear and in the groin is usually more pink. Ventral surface is smooth. Concealed surfaces: The rear surfaces of the thighs are purpley-grey. Eye: Iris copper, brown or blue. Extremities: Feet are not webbed. Habitat: Premontane and lower montane forest between 1089-2650 m. Ecology: This species is active diurnally and inhabits forest leaf litter (Savage 2002). Call: Males and females call to each other during courtship (Schlaepger and Figeroa-Sandi 1998). The males trill and squeak, to which females respond with squeaks (Schlaepfer and Figeroa-Sandi 1998). Type locality: Cerro Utyum, 5000-7000 ft, Cantón de Talamanca, Provincia de Limón; 1524-2134 m (Costa Rica) Diagnostic description: The legs lacking webbing. L finger of the hand is larger than the ll, or l and ll have a similar size. The fingers of the hands and feet usually lack well-defined discs, digital discs is visible even under magnification. The back is not uniformly granular or dark, but has red stripes paired. The fingers of the hand and II exhibit a similar length. Lacks cranial crests. It has a weak tarsal fold or tubercle. The head is narrow and measures between 30 and 43% of standard length. The groin and ventral surface lacking spots, and are often red in live specimens. Hand presents the subarticular, palmar and thenar low, rounded tubercles. The tubers are present and have a conical tubercle well developed and always present, and sometimes one or two smaller tubers. The plantar tubercles usually absent, but if present are large, low, round and scarce. The bottom surface of the tarsal segment is smooth. The males lack nuptial pads, but adults have vocal slits. The maximum standard length of males is 28 mm. and females is 35 mm. Habitat: They live in cloud forests (humid montane forest bajo). Reproduction: Encapsulated produce eggs which are laid in terrestrial conditions, with direct development (no tadpoles) (Savage 2002). Distribution in Costa Rica: In mid and highland ridges Tilarán Central Volcanic and Talamanca, between 1,080 and 2,650 m. Lift (Savage 2002). Distribution outside Costa Rica: It is located in the Cordilleras Tilarán Central Volcanic Cordillera and Cordillera de Talamanca in Costa Rica, and in the area of Chiriqui in western Panama.
