Adult: Species description based on Savage (2002). A very large frog, males to 60 mm, females to 103 mm. Adults have very prominent cranial crests. Dorsal: The dorsal coloration is dark brown. Females are typically solid brown, whereas males may have some darker blotches on the rear portion of the dorsal surface. The dorsal surface is fairly smooth, with only a few pustules if any. Bars are usually visible on the upper surfaces of the arms and legs. Ventral: Ventral surface yellow with brown mottling. Concealed surfaces: Posterior surface of thighs plain or with a little spotting. Extremities: Feet are not webbed. Metamorph juvenile: The dorsal surface of juveniles is covered in small white pustules (Savage 2002). Habitat: Premontane forest between 1000-1873 m elevation. Call: This species may not call (Savage 2002). Karyotype: 2N = 20 (Savage 2002) Type locality: Cerro Utyum, 6000 ft, Cantón de Talamanca, Provincia de Limón; 1829 m (Costa Rica) Diagnostic description: Amphibious large size, males 40-60 mm, females 72-103 mm in length; smooth or with few small pustules, dark brown back; smooth belly with brown spots; wide head with cranial crests; digital discs of the narrow hands and those of the slightly expanded feet without webbing (Savage 2002) Habitat: Lives in forest litter (Savage 2002). Reproduction: This species produces encapsulated eggs, which are laid in terrestrial conditions; development is direct (no tadpoles) (Savage 2002). Feeding: It feeds on small insects. Behavior: Night, although juveniles are diurnal (Savage 2002). Distribution in Costa Rica: In the middle lands south of the Cordillera de Talamanca, between 1,000 and 1,870 m. Lift (Savage 2002). Distribution outside Costa Rica: In western Panama (Savage 2002). |
