Adult: Species description based on Lynch (1985). Medium-large frog. Males to 46.4 mm, females to at least 70.5 mm. Dorsal: Dorsal coloration brown (sometimes reddish or greenish), with some vague patterning. The dorsal surface appears smooth, with no dorsolateral ridges. The upper lip has alternating red-brown and light brown barring. Ventral: The ventral surface has dark spots or mottling on an orangey or yellow background. Female throats are silvery with black spotting; in males the throat ranges in color from pale yellow to yellow-orange. Concealed surfaces: Undersides of thighs reddish while the rear surface of the thighs are black with tiny light blue spots. Eye: Iris bronze with black reticulations. Iris darker below than above, with a reddish line separating the upper and lower halves of the iris. Extremities: Hands and feet with almost no webbing and long, thin fingers and toes. Tadpole: This genus of frogs undergoes direct development, meaning that the eggs hatch directly into little froglets, and there is no larval stage. Habitat: Lowland forest and montane slopes from 910 to 1450 m elevation. Ecology: Craugastor emcelae may be found on rocks or low-lying vegetation near streams (Lynch 1985). Craugastor emcelae has experienced severe population declines in the Reserva Forestal Fortuna due to chytrid fungus (Lips 1999). Call: The vocal sac is internal (Lynch 1985).
