Adult: Species description based on Wake et al (2007). Slender salamander with slender limbs. Adults are relatively small, males 37-39 mm, females 38-41 mm. Dorsal: Dorsal surface dark brown with an orange, red-orange, or brownish-orange band that continues all the way to the tip of the tail (Wake et al 2007). Some cream colored flecks may be present along the edges of the band. Ventral: Ventral surface black or grey, often lighter on the throat. One specimen had mottled belly with a yellow-green throat. The tail is orange below. Distinguishing characteristics: Long, prehensile tail has a bright orange or red tip. Eye: Iris dark. Extremities: Hands and feet moderately webbed. Habitat: Lower montane rainforest from 1900 to 2300 m elevation. Ecology: This species is nocturnal and arboreal (Wake et al 2007). However, it has been encountered on low-lying vegetation and on the ground at night (Wake et al 2007). Type locality: "Costa Rica, Provincia Puntarenas, trail to Cerro Pando" |
