Atlantic Robber Frog, more...Frog (es: Rana De Hojarasca)
[Eleutherodactylus andi Savage, 1974] |
Adult: Species description based on Savage (2002). A moderate to large-sized frog. The head is rather narrow, with a long, pointed snout. Females grow much larger than males (males to 55 mm, females to 80 mm). Dorsal: Dorsal surface dark brown; sometimes a thin, light middorsal stripe is present. Ventral: The ventral surface has dark mottling on a white background. Some yellow or reddish coloration may be present near the rear end, as well as on the undersides of the thighs. A light stripe is always present on the throat. Concealed surfaces: The groin and posterior surface of the thighs have bright yellow spots or lines on a brown background. Eye: Iris coppery gold with a dark brown line separating the upper and lower halves. Extremities: Feet have moderate webbing. Breeding season: In Costa Rica, breeding takes place during the initial heavy rains of the wet season (Savage 2002). Males call near the banks of streams (Savage 2002). Egg: Eggs are deposited terrestrially and undergo direct development (Savage 2002). Habitat: Premontane forest between 1000 and 1200 m elevation. Call: A deep glug, repeated several times (Savage 2002). Karyotype: 2N = 22 (DeWeese 1976) Type locality: Costa Rica: Provincia de San Jose: Canton de Coronado: 0.8 km N juncture Rio Claro and Rio La Hondura, 1150 m Diagnostic description: Their legs have tiny webs between the fingers lll and lV, extending at most a little beyond the first subarticular tubercle of each toe. The dorsal skin is smooth or with a few warts and folds or cords, but never tuberculate. The tip of the fingers (especially fingers lll-lV) has clearly enlarged discs or bearings without cranial crests. The head is narrow and measures 30 to 43% of standard length. The bearings of the outer fingers (III-IV) of the hands are far larger than those of the fingers l-ll. The outer fingers and finger outside of the leg are usually truncated and sometimes marginalized. The legs exhibit a thin webbing extending to the level of first subarticular tubercle between fingers l-ll-ll, and a little beyond the first subarticular tubercle between ll-lV fingers. The hands have greatly enlarged bearings (emarginate in lll-lV fingers) with a width equal to or greater than the length of inner metatarsal tubercle. The color of the posterior surface of the thigh is chocolate-brown, with defined and / or yellow spots on live specimens wide stripes. Groin in living specimens shows wide spots or yellow stripes. The throat is dark brown or solid black. The lower surfaces of the body and members are strongly stained dark brown. Clear rear surfaces of the body and limbs are bright yellow, almost always impregnated with salmon-pink color on live specimens. Adult males have nuptial pads and vocal slits. The maximum standard length of males is 55 mm. and females is 80 mm. Habitat: They live in the montane rain forest. We have found them in bromeliads. Reproduction: Gravid females were found in bromeliads. Distribution in Costa Rica: Endemic. In the midlands of the Atlantic side of the Cordillera de Guanacaste, Tilarán, northern Central Volcanic and Talamanca, between 1,000 and 1,200 m. Lift (Savage 2002). Populations of this species throughout its range disappeared in Costa Rica in the early 90's. This species has not been seen since. |
