Habitat: Often encountered on sand beneath rocks. Natural History Notes: This aggressive, carnivorous species is locally known as the Conch killer. The Chestunut turban Depth: less than 1m Characteristics: This large species usually reaches around 180 mm. The shell color of juveniles is usually solid, ranging from orange to purplish brown. As individuals age, the shells become clouded with cream or white. Larger shells are often mottled with brown or orange-brown, crossed by narrow spiral lines of darker color. The protoconch is small and upright, with 1.5 whorls. Subsequent whorls are convex and increase in size to an extended body whorl. Axial grooves wrinkle several subsutural cords. Elsewhere, whorls are more smooth or crossed by weakly incised spiral lines. The thin outer lip has a row of small dark-brown swellings formed by the ends of the incised lines.
