Habitat: We can find this species along small streams, in woodland and forests. It can also be found in mangroves and the lowlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from southern Mexico to northern Bolivia and southern Brazil. Natural History Notes: Chloroceryle aenea is the smallest kingfisher bird present in Panama. The American pygmy is shy and will be found hidden under the cover of vegetation, close to the water. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: The total length of this species is 5 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The male has its plumage above of a metallic green-bronze coloration with a large collar on the sides of the neck. The underparts are orange-red and paler on the throat. The center of the belly, as well as the part under the tail-coverts are white. The wings show light white dots. The female looks like the male but has in addition a large green-black band across its chest.
