Habitat: They favor habitats with high trees in second-growth forests or even residential areas. Distribution: Species reported to breed in southeastern United States and migrates through Middle America to Colombia, in Florida and the Great Antilles. Natural History Notes: This bird species is strictly nocturnal. During the day, it rests on the ground or high in trees. At night, they will come out into semi-open areas to feed. It has been observed that on migration, this species can prey on small birds. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 27.94 cm and 30.48 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The above part is “rufous-brown” colored and spotted beige and black. The below part of the body is pale brown with blackish bands and the throat is white. There is no wing band. The tail is orange-brown colored with black dots and the outer feathers are tipped white. The female on the other side does not show the white tip on the tail.
