Habitat: Marine. Inshore and offshore coral reefs and nearby rubble areas. Natural History Notes: Adults feed mainly on benthic algae but also on sponges, ascidians and anemones while juvenile feed on invertebrates like harpacticoid copepods and nemerteans. Often solitary. Aggressive when breeding, juveniles are aggressively territorial. Characteristics: Adults : upper portion of the body dark, lower portion yellowish. Vertical black lines following scale edges. Dark spot often present on top of caudal peduncle. Anal fin extending well beyond the caudal fin base. Juveniles : yellow with violet streaks on the head which continue onto the back, dark spot on rear portion of dorsal fin.
