Habitat: Marine. Although some deep (up to 120 m) observations are reported, usually found in shallow waters of coral reefs, often near top of outer edge where there are caves, holes, and abundant fire coral. Young often seen among branches of stinging coral (Millepora). Natural History Notes: Territorial but do not aggressively defend his domain. Feeds mainly on fine algae and organic detritus, but also eats coral polyps and other invertebrate animal material. Juveniles occasionally pick parasites from other species of fish. Characteristics: Bright yellow to nearly orange caudal fin, narrowly edged above and below with the dark color of the body. Juveniles : bright blue spots over the entire dark region and similarly colored leading edges on the ventral and anal fins. The blue spots are reduced in number and restricted to the dorsum in adults, which are are yellowish brown.
