Habitat: Marine, demersal. Rocky and coral bottoms, most abundants on shallow patch reefs and wall tops. Occur also in deeper offshore waters. Depth range 0 - 180 m. Natural History Notes: Nocturnal. Drift inconspicuously during day in shaded areas near bottom. Usually moves at night over sand and grass beds, taking mainly crabs and other small crustaceans. Occasionally gather in groups. Characteristics: Light silvery red with a faint horizontal striping on the body. Yellowish interspinous membranes of front dorsal fin without distinct white areas near tips. Elongated rear dorsal fin and upper lobe of tail. Largest squirrelfish.
