Habitat: Marine. Reef-associated. Depth range 1 - 70 m. Natural History Notes: Generally occurs solitarily or in pairs. Moves gracefully between seafans, seawhips, and corals. Feeds almost exclusively on sponges supplemented by small amounts of algae, tunicates, hydroids and bryozoans. Young pick ectoparasites from other fishes. Characteristics: Brillant blue and yellow. Caudal and pectoral fins entirely yellow at all stages. Adults : mouth, chin, throat, chest and abdomen purplish blue. Spot on the nape ringed and spotted with bright blue. Juveniles : narrow curved light blue bars on dark background. The bars increase in number and then gradually disappear as the fish grows. Dark blue bar bordered in brillant blue across eye, yellow lips.
