Bocas Species Database Habitat: Found on fine grained-sand at water depths varying between 2-4 meters. Distribution: In the region of Bocas del Toro, the species was found in Pond Sock Reef and Mangrove Inn, Isla Colon. It can also be found in the Eastern North Atlantic Ocean. Natural History Notes: The species was first described by Westblad in 1942. Characteristics: Childia crassum is a microscopic Acoeal that measures around 650µm in length and 160 µm in width. Its shape is elongated, with a rounded-shape at the anterior end and more pointed shape at the posterior end. The body does not have a conspicuous color pattern. An important feature for this species is a body-wall musculature with longitudinal fibers located outside of circular fibers. For the reproductive system, the animal has separate male and female gonopores and the male copulatory organ consists of fine penis stylets and organized in cone-shape. |
