Habitat: The Slaty spinetail will favor shrubby overgrown clearings and woodland borders habitats in the lowlands and foothills. Distribution: This species has been reported from eastern Honduras to northwestern Peru. Natural History Notes: It is not that easy to see the Slaty spinetail since it likes to hide in the foliage, as it forages for beetles, caterpillars and other insects. Its call can be a prolonged sound like "ch-ch-chirrrrr" or "brrrrr". Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: This species has a total length of 15.2 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has the plumage mostly black gray on the above which contrasts with the rufous crown and hindneck. The wings are also mostly rufous colored. It is characterized by the slaty coloration on the sides of the head and on the underparts. We can distinguish the presence of white lines on the throat. Finally, the tail is long, brown and graduated.
