Habitat: This Barbet species will favor forests and forest borders habitats in the highlands of western Panama. Distribution: This species has been reported from Costa Rica and western Panama. Natural History Notes: The Prong-billed Barbet is usually found in small groups, foraging at middle and low tree levels. You will probably hear it rather than seeing it. Its call is a repeated deep sound like "cwa-cwa-cwa-cwa...". Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: This species has a total length of 17.8 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird is characterized by a very heavy blue-gray bill with the tip of the lower mandible pronged and the upper mandible notched. The iris is dark. Then, the plumage is yellow-olive above, with a more orange coloration on the crown. We can also distinguished a black patch on the nape and a black patch around the base of the bill. The sides of the head, the throat and the breast have an ochre-orange coloration, with a blue-gray patch on the sides of the breast. The flanks are grayer and the center of the belly is yellow. The female looks similar but lacks the black patch on the nape.
