Habitat: This bird is not easily seen, but you may find it in humid forest in lowlands and in foothills habitats. Distribution: This species has been reported from Honduras to eastern Panama. Natural History Notes: Very little is know about this species in Panama. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). This is a resident species. Characteristics: This species has a total length between 9 and 10 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). A characteristic of this species is the naked skin around the eye that has a purple coloration for the male and a black coloration for the female. Also, both sexes have a crown and short crest rufous colored. The plumage of the rest of the body is mostly olive brown with black and beige spots on the above. Also, the sides of the head, the throat and the foreneck are black. The underparts are chestnut. The female looks similar but the sides of the neck, the throat and the forehead are brown and not black, as it is the case in the male.
