Habitat: The Rufous Piha will prefer humid forest and mature second-growth woodland habitats in the lowlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from southeastern Mexico to western Ecuador. Natural History Notes: You may find this species perched on a tree branch for long time periods. Its call is fairly loud with vocalizations such as "chooweeeoo" and "peeeea wheeoo", given at long intervals. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: This bird species has total length of 9.5 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This species has a black bill with some beige and pinkish spots on the basal half of the lower mandible. The plumage has a characteristic rufous-cinnamon coloration with a brighter coloration on the top of the head and the palest coloration on the throat.
