Habitat: The Black-cowled Oriole can be found along forested rivers, woodland and forest borders and clearings. In Panama, it is found only in western Bocas del Toro lowlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from southeastern Mexico to Caribbean western Panama, Greater Antilles and some of the Bahamas. Natural History Notes: This bird is usually found in pairs and feeds on flowering Erythrina trees. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 7.5 inches and 8 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The plumage is moslty black as well as the tail. However, we can distinguish the wing-coverts, rump, breast and belly of a yellow coloration. Also, there is a small chestnut patch between the black chest and the yellow breast. The immature bird looks similar but the black coloration is replaced by a yellow one.
