Polyp: Well developed colonies up to 350 mm high. Internodes long, ringed basally. Hydrothecal pedicels originated distally, alternate. Hydrothecae almost cylindrical, elongated, often slightly asymmetric; rim with bicuspidate cusps and embayments symmetric and rounded. Reproduction: Female and male gonothecae equal, usually inverted-conical. Adult medusa unknown. Newborn medusae are similar to those of other representatives of the genus. Ecology and Distribution: Substrate generalist. Nearly cosmopolitan species. Known in Bocas del Toro from vicinity of Manuguar Cay. Similar taxa: Obelia, Clytia, other Campanulariidae in general. Bocas Species Database Distribution: Virgin Islands, Bonaire, Aruba, Venezuela, Guatemala, Panama, Colombia, and Belize. Characteristics: Colonies very branched with erect stems bearing alternate hydrothecae. Colonies are polysyphonic and the thecae have bidentate margin. |
