Polyp: Hydrocaulus monosiphonic, unbranched or irregularly branched, and sometimes dichotomously branched; perisarc of moderate thickness; internodes usually with one or more annulations or bulges basally, smooth distally; distal end of each internode bearing a primary hydrotheca and an upwards-curved apophysis supporting internode above. Hydranths large, with dome-shaped hypostome; tentacles about 16-25, with basal web absent. Living tissues of colony with zooxanthellae. Reproduction: Fixed gonophores. Ecology and Distribution: Originally distributed in the North Sea, British Isles and Mediterranean Sea. Now found on the Caribbean coast of Panama. In Bocas del Toro, known near Bocatorito Bay. Similar taxa: Campanulinidae. Bocas Species Database Distribution: Antilles, Bonaire, Aruba, between Grenada and Trinidad, Belize, and Panama. |
