Habitat: This Owl species can be commonly found in forests and second-growth woodland, mostly in the lowlands and foothills. Distribution: This species has been reported from northern Mexico to Bolivia, northern Argentina and southern Brazil. Natural History Notes: The Mottled Owl is a strictly nocturnal bird and also very territorial. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 33 cm and 35.5 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has a brown iris and shows no presence of ear-tufts. The plumage is dark brown above, mottled with gray-beige and dark gray, and the eyebrown stripe is white. The wings and the tail are dark brown with beige stripes. Then, the breast is beige, but shows many stripes and dots gray colored and the belly is pale beige with dark brown stripes.
