Distribution: This species has been reported from Mexico to central Argentina. Natural History Notes: The Amazon kingfisher is the largest green colored kingfisher reported. It is a solitary bird, found only near water, where it feeds primarily on fish. This species is generally not found along the coasts. Characteristics: The total length of this species varies is of 11 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The part above has a dark olive coloration with a thing white collar on the hindneck. We can distinguish white spots scattered on the wings. The male has a large "rufous" band on the chest and some green spots on the flanks, whereas the female has a broken band of green spots in change of the "rufous" band present in the male. Notes: Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species.
