Habitat: This species prefers beach and mudflat habitats. Distribution: This species breeds in North America and migrates south for winter in southern United States and through most of South America, including Panama. Natural History Notes: Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 16.51 cm and 19.05 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The beak is short and has an interesting orange-yellow coloration with a black tip. The legs are also orange to yellow. The background coloration above is brown, except for the forehead that exhibits a white coloration and where a black band passes behind it and on the cheeks. The part below is white and contrasts with a black band that crosses the chest. Interestingly, the plumage of this bird species varies between breeding and nonbreeding seasons. When it is not breeding: the beak is blacker and the chest band is more brownish.
