Habitat: The Black-faced grosbeak can be found in the middle and upper levels of humid forest and forest borders. It might also be found in forest clearings. Distribution: This species has been reported from southeastern Mexico to western Panama. Natural History Notes: This large grosbeak species will usually forage at high levels in trees. It mostly eats seeds, beetles, other insects and nectar from flowers. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: This species has a total length of 7 inches cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This bird has the crown (top of the head), the sides of the head of a yellow dark coloration. The facial area and the throat are black. The plumage is dark yellow but shade gradually into yellow-olive toward the part below, with the exception of the rump gray colored. Then, the breast is yellow and the belly and the part under the tail-coverts are gray. The immature bird will have a more gray facial area, compared to the adult.
