Habitat: This Woodpecker species can be found in forests, second-growth woodland and forest borders, in the lowlands and foothills. Distribution: This species has been reported from Mexico to western Panama. Natural History Notes: Thie Pake-billed Woodpecker can be usually found alone or in pairs, perched at all tree heights. The woodpecker is well known for its drumming sound on trees and this species shows a characteristic double drumming, where the first stroke is louder. This bird usually chips out holes, often quite large, while searching out insects in trees. It will mainly eat beetle larvae, with some berries or other fruit. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 33 cm and 35.5 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This unique bird is characterized by a yellowish-white bill and by the bright red coloration on the crest, the head and the throat. The iris is yellow. Otherwise, the plumage is mostly black above with white stripes going down the neck onto the back. Then, the breast and the belly are beige with black stripes. The female looks similar but the throat and the crown are black, not red.
