Habitat: This bird prey will favor canopy and borders of second-growth woodland habitats in the lowlands. Distribution: This species has been reported from northern Mexico to Bolivia, northern Argentina and Uruguay. Natural History Notes: Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 56 cm and 64 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). This hawk species is very similar to the Mangrove black-hawk, except that it shows longer legs. The Cere (bill) and the legs are both yellow. The adlt plumage is mostly black with white coverts on the upper tail. A characteristic of this species is that the tail has two large white bands and a white tip. We can also distinguish white stripes along the thighs. The race that will be mostly found in the eastern part of Panama may not show the stripes on the thighs.
