Habitat: Can be found in open areas with trees, shrubby clearings and along tree-boarded streams. Distribution: Reported from Eastern Mexico to Central Costa Rica; Colombia and northern Venezuela; western Ecuador and northwestern Peru. In Panama it was found on the western and central parts of the country. Natural History Notes: Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). It is a resident species. Characteristics: This species has a total length of 11.43 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). The males have a beautiful mixture of metallic green upperparts and brilliant green lowerparts, with a more bluish belly center and breast. The tail is purple but has a black tip. On the other hand, the females have also green upperparts but are mostly white below with stripes of greenish-blue. The tail is black but the outer feathers are somehow tipped white.
