Bocas Species Database Habitat: Coral sand Distribution: Species of Cephalorhyncha have been recorded from California, East Asia and Australia. The recorded specimens are only known from Bocas del Toro, Panama. Natural History Notes: Since the recorded specimens do not fit better into any other kinorhynch genus, they are tentatively assigned to Cephalorhyncha. Characteristics: Species of the genus Cephalorhyncha have a first trunk segment consisting of a complete ring, and a second made up by a tergal and a sternal plate with an incomplete midventral fissure in the sternal plate. The following 8 trunk segments consist of one tergal and two sternal plates, whereas the 11th and terminal trunk segment consists of paired tergal and sternal plates. The animal possesses middorsal spines, lateroventral spines, ventrolateral spines, and one pair of accessory spines located on the lateral part of the 10th segment.The recorded specimens share these features, except for the tergal plate in the terminal segment, which is clearly single and unpaired. |
