Adult: Species description based on Bolanos and Wake (2009). A fairly large salamander with a robust body. Very few specimens of this species exist. Specimens of males reach lengths of at least 64 mm. Dorsal: Dorsal coloration is brown, with much irregular yellow spotting. The spotting joins to create a mottled pattern along the sides of the body. Ventral: The ventral surface is lighter than the dorsal surface. Extremities: The hands and feet have very well-defined digits, with some webbing between them.
Habitat: Montane forest and more open grassy areas above 3000 m. Type locality: Cerro Echandi (top of Cerro 3167 m), Prov. Puntarenas, Costa Rica, latitude 9°01’50” N (9.0306), longitude 82°49’20” W (-82.8222) (3.4 km max. error, WGS84 datum), elevation 3162 m
