Adult: Species description based on Savage (2002). A smallish frog (males to 25 mm, females to 35 mm). Dorsal: The color of the dorsum is yellow-brown with some darker brown markings. The dorsal surface is not smooth. The tubercles present may form an H- or W-shaped pattern just behind the head that is darker than the dorsal surface. Dark bars are present on the upper surfaces of the thighs. Ventral: The ventral surface is white. Concealed surfaces: The groin area is red. The reddish coloration extends along the inner surface of the thigh and is also present on the under surface of the calf. The rear surface of the thigh is brownish-red. Eye: The eye is yellow above and coppery below.
Habitat: Lowland and premontane forest to 1500 m. Ecology: This is a diurnal leaf-litter inhabitant (Savage 2002). At night, it perches on low-lying vegetation (Savage 2002). Call: A short "tick", repeated infrequently (Ibanez, Rand and Jaramillo 1999). Type locality: Cerro Utyum, 5000-7000 ft, Cantón de Talamanca, Provincia de Limón; 1524-2134 m (Costa Rica) Diet: A variety of small arthropods, but not ants (Lieberman 1986).
Diagnostic description: The legs lacking webbing. Ll finger is longer than the l: lll-lV fingers have clearly expanded discs. The heel has a tuber (trace) well defined, pointy to fold. Lacks a defined brow tuber, although there may be a number of small tubers over the eyelid and several small warts on its upper surface. Presents some, at least lower the lll-lV paw fingers, pointed or sharp subarticular tubercles.
The eardrum is thin, differentiated. Tarsus is 1 to 2 and a short outer tuber or tuber inner fold. Presents some palmar tubercles low accessories. The back is granular. The posterior surface of the thigh is coffee. The inguinal region, the anterior and posterior surface of the thigh and lower calf area are red in live specimens. Lack of dark and light spots in the inguinal region. The back is rather uniform light brown with spots, dots or short lines, or. Adult males lack nuptial pads, although they have vocal slits.
The maximum standard length of males is 23 mm. and females is 35 mm.
Habitat: In Cerere Biological Reserve Hitoy individuals have been observed in the mulch near streams or in low vegetation at night.
Reproduction: Eggs laid on the ground have a direct development.
Food: They eat beetles, flies and mites.
Behavior: They are diurnal and nocturnal habits.
Distribution in Costa Rica: In low and middle wetlands of the Atlantic slope and mountain passes of the Cordilleras de Guanacaste and Tilarán, between 19 and 920 m. Lift (Savage 2002).
Distribution outside Costa Rica: They are in the lower and side premontane Caribbean lands Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama. Also located on both slopes in western and central Panama. It ranges from 40 to 1300 m.
