Habitat: Merine. Reef-associated. Depth range 3 - 92 m. Juveniles hide in shells and recesses in the reefs. Natural History Notes: Territorial. Omnivorous, adults feed on sponges, tunicates, zoantharian and algae. Juveniles feed mainly on algae and detritus, occasionaly remove ectoparasites from other fishes. Juveniles often associated with fire corals. Characteristics: Adults : most of the body black. Head, nape, chest, abdomen, front of dorsal fin, hind margin of dorsal and anal fin and all paired fins and caudal fin yellow. Juveniles : entirely yellow-orange except for a blue-edged black spot on the on the upper side of the body posterior to the midpoint.
