Habitat: This species will prefer rapidly flowing stream and river habitats. Distribution: Species reported from Costa Rica to northern Argentina and southeastern Brazil. Natural History Notes: This species often stands on gravel bars or bolders in the middle of turbulent streams or rivers, but is inconspicuous despite being in the open. Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 23 inches and 25 inches (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). We can note that the fasciated tiger-heron has a heavier and shorter bill than other tiger-herons and present a more curved shape. On the head, we can distinguish a black crown and gray sides. The neck and the upperparts are light black with pale beige spots. The lower underparts have a “rufous” coloration. Notes: Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC).
