Habitat: This species will be found flying over open areas in search of preys. Distribution: Species reported from southwestern United States to northern Argentina, Paraguay and southern Brazil. Natural History Notes: An interesting behavior of the Zone-tailed hawk is that it often mimics the Turkey vulture (a scavenger) in order to lure its prey in the air. Its diet consists in order birds. Conservation status according to IUCN 2008 Red list: Least Concern (LC). Characteristics: The total length of this species varies between 47 cm and 55 cm (measured from tip of bill to end of tail). Its wingspan is around 1.2 meters so we can see that the wings are fairly long. The wings and the tail are all black, but on the tail we can see three to four white bands. The flight feathers are grayish. The cere (bill) and the legs are yellow. Immatures are similar except for small white spots on the breast and tails with narrow gray and black bands and a broad dark tip.
