Habitat: This crab usually lives just above the sea level, amongst rocks. It feeds on algae, but can also eat small dead organisms if its primary food source becomes scarce. Distribution: This species has been reported from Mexico and throughout Central America and the Galapagos Islands. Natural History Notes: It is one of the most abundant crabs of the western coast of South America. Humans do not eat it but rather use it as a bait to catch fishes. Characteristics: This crab shows 5 pairs of legs, where the two front pairs posess small chelae. The carapace is rather flat and can measure up to 8 cm in length. The coloration pattern can vary between dark brown to dark red with yellow lines and spots. The ventral part is often blue.
