Habitat: In habitat bays, lagoons, turtle grass beds and rubble areas around shallow path reefs. Mangrove roots. Distribution: Caribbean Depth: 1 - 35 ft. Characteristics: Massive amorphous to lobate, with smooth, to tuberculate surface. Bright red or orange red. Oscules (1-2 cm wide) on top of lobes. Soft, compressible, easily torn. Notes: Tedania ignis (Duchassaing & Michelotti, 1864) is well known as the “Fire sponge”. A lighter orange “chimera” between Tedania ignis and a Mycale (Paresperella) sp. is found on Bocas del Toro mangroves.
