Habitat: Mangrove roots and artificial substrate in town. Distribution: This species is common throughout the Caribbean (and warm waters). Depth: 0.5-1.0 m Characteristics: Colonial tunicate found in various color morphs like red, honey colored, green (although usually transparent) with a blob/jelly-like consistency. Zooids are 5.0 mm long; there are 13-14 rows of stigmata in branchial sac and each row contains 10-12 stigmata. A distinguishing characteristic of this genus is that the transverse vessels are undulating or wave-like (to see this, you must cut open the pharynx and stain it). The sac-like posterior abdomen is long and contains gonads. The one larva found was 0.5 mm long. The species P. constellatum is characterized by zooids that are arranged in a star-like pattern around the cloacal opening (this is variable).
