Family: Campanulariidae

Polyp: Colonies usually stolonal but sometimes erect, arising from a creeping hydrorhiza. Pedicels mostly unbranched, annulated basally and distally, occasionally with annuli or wrinkles elsewhere but mostly smooth. Hydrothecae cone-shaped with thin perisarc; margin with 12 to 15 deeply cut triangular and oblique cusps. Reproduction: Gonothecae elongated, walls smooth or slightly wavy; distally truncated, rounded aperture. Medusa similar to Clytia hemisphaerica but much smaller and provided with 16 tentacles; oval gonads. Ecology and Distribution: Substrate generalist. Circumglobal species. Known from Bocas del Toro from San Cristobal. Similar taxa: Clytia hemisphaerica. Bocas Species Database Distribution: Venezuela, Virgin Islands, Panama, Guatemala, and Colombia. Characteristics: Colonies are slightly branched and thecae have characteristic oblique teeth. Medusae are about 8mm in diameter when mature, and up to 16 tentacles andn half the number of statocists. |
