Habitat: Marine. Grassy coves, coral-studded limestone slopes, patch reefs, mixed rock and sand bottoms. Depth range 2 - 50 m. Natural History Notes: Secretive, often seen hiding among gorgonian fronds or antler coral. Feeds on algae and invertebrates. This species is rare and almost never observed in the Bay of Almirante and in the Lagoon of Chiriqui. Characteristics: Enlarged paired spines on the sides of the caudal peduncle. Large dewlap (extendible belly appendage). Various shades of brown. Dark dots variously scattered over the head and body. Reticulum of pale lines over the entire body. Posterior edge of pelvic flap broadly yellow with interconnected rows of blue dots, thos of outer row forming a well-defined submarginal blue line. Can change color, pale or darken dramtically to blend with background
