Habitat: Marine, brackish freshwater. Reefs, wrecks, rocky inshore areas. Found without great difficulty in the Bahamas near Orbicella stacks and the jagged Palythoa-covered reefs. The young occur inshore and may be found in estuaries, brackish or even freshwater. Depth range 5 - 30 m. Natural History Notes: Feeds mainly on fishes and benthic invertebrates, including shrimps, crabs, gastropods and cephalopods. Characteristics: Pale grey to reddish brown, may lighten or darken dramatically. The most caracteristic color feature is the pale triangle beneath the eye, but this is not always present. Youngs with a lengthwise blue line beneath eye across the opercle which breaks up into a row of spots on adults. Two large, fang-like teeth at front of upper jaw.
