Habitat: Marine. Usually found in reef areas, occasionally over sand. Natural History Notes: Secretes toxic substances into the water when excited. Observed to blow jets of water at a sandy bottom, presumably to uncover burrowing organisms for food. Feeds on a great variety of invertebrates such as polychaete worms, peanut worms, crabs, shrimps, tunicates, sponges and acorn worms. Normally solitary but occasionally swim in small groups. Depth: 0 - 50m Characteristics: Absence of any spines from the carapace. Carapace and caudal peduncle blackish with numerous small white spots. Area of pale honeycomb markings on central midbody. Lips and bases of fins blackish. Juveniles : dark body covered with large yellow to pale yellow spots.
