Habitat: Marine. Commonly found on shallow and deep reefs and exposed rocky ledges. Natural History Notes: Feeds on various invertebrates. Depth: 2 - 80m Characteristics: Three distinct color phases. Adults : dark lines running up and back from the eye (at all but young stages). Patch of black dots behind these lines. Vertical black bar on the side, continuous with a black stripe along base of soft portion of dorsal fin and upper caudal peduncle. The fish is yellow to orange anterior to the vertical bar and principally green posterioir to bar. Intermediates : yellowish, darker above, without markings on the body. Color shading highly variable. Youngs : yellow with a dark-edged electric blue stripe from the eye to the base of the caudal fin.
