Habitat: Marine. Coral reefs, seagrass beds, rock piles, rocky ledges, sandy bottom, around wharves and pilings. Depth range 1 - 15 m. Natural History Notes: Omnivorous, very diversified in food habits; feeds on colonial anemones (Zoanthus), benthic algae, copepods, pelagic tunicates, small fishes, larvae of various invertebrates an adult nudibranchs. Adults frequently form large feeding aggregations of up to several hundred individuals. Juveniles may hold cleaning stations together with the doctorfish (Acanthurus chirurgus) and the blue tang (Acanthurus coeruleus) and graze algae as well as pick molted skin and parasites from green turtles (Chelonia mydas ). Characteristics: Upper body usually yellow, occasionally with shades of green to blue, and white to bluish silver or light gray below. Five blackish bars on body, narrower than interspaces and nearly uniform in width. A faint sixth bar may be present posteriorly on caudal peduncle. Male becomes dark blue to purple during mating season when guarding reddish purple egg patches. Size 4-6 in.
